STCW Refresher Training Block – Route 1 Course Overview

STCW revalidation is a requirement of the 2010 Manila Amendments. If you are serving on board a ship and are qualified in any of the following areas you are now required to have documentary evidence of either completing the Basic Safety Training or the equivalent refresher/revalidation course within the last 5 years.
Through this block option the Updated PST and Fire Fighting and Fire Prevention are mandatory, with the option to select the remaining three courses in addition: -Updated Proficiency in Personal Survival Techniques (U-PST)
-Updated Proficiency in Fire Fighting and Fire Prevention
-Updated Proficiency in Advanced Fire Fighting Route 1
-Updated Proficiency in Survival Crafts & Rescue Boats (U-PSCRB) Route 1
-Updated Proficiency in Fast Rescue Boats (U-PFRB) Route 1

Course Content:

STCW Updated Proficiency in Personal Survival Techniques (PST) Overview – MANDATORY

This 1/2 day course aims involves time in the classroom and pool facility (supervised by fully qualified instructors making it suitable for non-swimmers), and covers the main types of maritime emergencies, types of life-saving appliances, survival craft, equipment in survival craft, location of personal life-saving appliances and principles of survival during a maritime emergency. It also covers how to don a lifejacket, how to safely jump from a height into water, how to right an inverted raft whilst wearing a lifejacket, how to swim whilst wearing a lifejacket, how to board a survival craft from the water whilst wearing a lifejacket, what initial actions you need to take when boarding survival craft and how to operate survival craft equipment.

STCW Updated Proficiency in Fire Fighting and Fire Prevention Overview – MANDATORY

This 1 day course that involves theoretical and practical exercises involving the use of hoses, extinguishers and BA sets.

STCW Updated Proficiency in Advanced Fire Fighting – Route 1 Overview

This 1/2 day Route 1 course covers controlling fire operations on board ship, organisation and training of fire parties and inspection and servicing of fire detection and extinguishing systems and equipment.

STCW Updated Proficiency in Survival Craft & Rescue Boats (PSCRB) – Route 1 Overview

This 1/2 day Route 1 revalidation course comprises theory and practical sessions, where candidates are required to be fit enough to undertake practical drills in handling inflatable rescue boats, life boats and life rafts.

STCW Updated Proficiency in Fast Rescue Boats (PFRB) – Route 1 Overview

This 1/2 day practical training refresher course for seafarers who are required to take charge of a fast rescue boat and any crew on a Merchant Navy vessel who make up part of the FRB crew.

Entry Requirements:

Seafarers must be able to provide evidence of having previously completed their basic safety training or equivalent refresher training. To complete Route 1 courses, delegates are required to provide a signed self-declaration form as a pre-requisite to attending the reduced hours entry route of the STCW revalidation course which is provided as part of your joining instructions.
